This shot shows the Col du Lauteret (2058m), looking west towards Briancon in the French Alps. It was taken from the lower slopes of the Col du Galibier, which rises further to 2646m.
I visited the Tour de France cycle race every year from 1991 to 2001, and the Galibier is one of the Classic cols, having been used many times, since the earliest days of the Tour in 1904.
The occupants of the cars parked on the Lauteret would face a walk of around 8.5km to reach the summit.

Click here for the cycle racing part of my site, which features many photos from not only the Tour de France, but many other major European races.
