PHOTOGRAMMETRIC SERVICES:

INTRODUCTION:

Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar - Now largely redundant due to modern survey methods; some, including this one on Pendle Hill, Lancashire have been 'adopted' by members of the Public who help maintain them.Following a 25 year career at Photarc Surveys, one of the UK's leading specialist digital photogrammetric mapping companies, and my recent move to Cumbria, I am now able to offer my services as a freelance photogrammetrist using my own ISM digital photogrammetric workstation.

I worked at Photarc from 1979 to mid 2004, firstly as a draughtsman, before training as a photogrammetrist
I have worked on Topocart, Intergraph IMA, Zeiss (Jena) Dicomat and Zeiss Planicomp analytical instruments, and Zeiss Phodis and ISM digital systems.

PROJECTS & EXPERIENCE:

Due to the extremely varied type of projects undertaken by Photarc Surveys, I have experience of most types of photogrammetric work, including......

  • 1:500 scale mapping. The "bread and butter" of most UK photogrammetric companies. I have been involved in 1:500 scale mapping from my earliest days at Photarc, and have worked on probably hundreds of projects.
  • Large scale, high precision mapping. - Photarc developed a system of producing highly accurate highway levelling information using a helicopter mounted Zeiss UMK camera at low level. This system produces very accurate level data, down to a few mm.
  • Small scale mapping, including OS 1250 and 2500 work, and work for other national mapping agencies.
  • Terrestrial projects, mainly architectural work, but also some engineering projects. I have worked on countless architectural projects, typically 1:50 and 1:20 scale mapping to English Heritage spec of nationally important buildings.
  • With the introduction of digital photogrammetric systems, I also gained experience on the Zeiss Phodis and ISM systems of digital triangulation techniques and orthophoto production. (Photarc Surveys are the agents in the UK and Ireland for the ISM range of digital photogrammetric products).
I also have several years experience of the digital correction of orthophotos in mono and colour to a high standard using Adobe Photoshop.
  • I set up the Photarc Surveys company web site in 1997 and later took over the running of the company's network system.

CURRENT CAPABILITIES:

Using my own ISM digital photogrammetric workstation, I am able to work on a variety of mapping and terrestrial projects on a contract basis.

The ISM system is a PC based digital photogrammetric system offering full digital mapping, triangulation observation and orthophoto production. It utilises "Crystaleyes" LCD glasses to view the stereo image on the PC's screen, and can use either hand wheels and foot disk, or a "3D mouse".

I use a powerful PC which in addition to its use as my digital photogrammetric workstation, is ideal for high resolution image manipulation, eg orthophotos. (Pentium 4 2.8Ghz, 2 Gb RAM, 250Gb storage, DVD writer etc). Software includes Photoshop CS, Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, Freehand, Fireworks and Flash, etc.
